Define a cardiac cycle and the cardiac output.

Solution: Cardiac cycle:

  • Blood circulates in the heart due to the alternate contraction and relaxation of the chambers of the heart.
  • Diastole refers to the relaxation or expansion phase, whereas systole refers to the contraction phase.
  • A diastole occurs after each systole.
  • A cardiac cycle is the sequence of events that occur during a single heartbeat. It lasts approximately 0.8 seconds.

Cardiac output:

  • It refers to the amount of blood pumped by each ventricle in a minute.
  • It is provided by: Cardiac output is calculated by multiplying the stroke volume by the number of heartbeats per minute.
  • Cardiac output = stroke volume x number of heart beats per minute.
