Solution: An increase in the average temperature of the surface of the earth is termed Global warming. It can be caused due to the following reasons:
(i) Global warming is caused by a rise in the concentration of greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere. Methane, carbon dioxide, and water vapor are gases that trap solar rays that the Earth emits, helping to keep the globe warm and so enabling human survival.
(ii) The use of fossil fuels, industrialization, and deforestation can all contribute to global warming.
Impact of Global warming:
Global warming has caused a 0.6-degree increase in the average temperature of the Earth over the last few decades, disrupting the natural water cycle and, as a result, changes in rainfall patterns. Rainfall is also affected by these changes.
Global warming has also caused the polar ice caps and mountain glaciers to melt, leading to an increase in the sea level, hence the inundation of coastal areas.
(i) Use of fossil fuels must be reduced
(ii) Increase the usage of bio-fuels
(iii) Switch to a renewable source of energy such as CNG
(iv) Promote reforestation
(v) Encourage and carry out recycling of materials
(vi) Energy must be efficiently used
