Find the roots of the given equation: $3 x^{2}-2 x-1=0$

$3 x^{2}-2 x-1=0$
$\Rightarrow 9 x^{2}-6 x-3=0 \quad$ (Multiplying both sides by 3) $\Rightarrow 9 x^{2}-6 x=3$
$\Rightarrow(3 x)^{2}-2 \times 3 x \times 1+1^{2}=3+1^{2} \quad$ [Adding $1^{2}$ on both sides]
$\Rightarrow(3 x-1)^{2}=3+1=4=(2)^{2}$
$\Rightarrow 3 x-1=\pm 2 \quad$ (Taking square root on both sides) $\Rightarrow 3 x-1=2$ or $3 x-1=-2$
$\Rightarrow 3 x=3$ or $3 x=-1$
$\Rightarrow x=1$ or $x=-\frac{1}{3}$
Hence, 1 and $-\frac{1}{3}$ are the roots of the given equation.
