UP Board Biology Class 9 syllabus
UP Board Biology Class 9 syllabus

The Uttar Pradesh Board of high school and intermediate Education officials have designed the UP Board syllabus for biology class 9. Biology is a part of the science syllabus. This syllabus makes students aware of the syllabus being asked in the UP class 9 Board exams.

In this article, we will discuss the detailed syllabus of biology class 9 of the UP Board. It helps students prepare for the UP class 9 exam, lay the foundation of biology science for class 10 board exams, and decide streams like medicine, pharmacy, and biotechnology for higher studies. This detailed syllabus will also help students in making efficient study schedules and understanding marking patterns.

Basic knowledge of the living world, diseases, ecology, ecosystems, food production, etc., is necessary to understand the biology of UP Board class 9. This class 9 biology syllabus of the UP board consists of both theory and practical. The weightage of the theory of science class 9 is 70%, and for practical is 15% and 15% for the project.

The UP board science syllabus for class 9 was reduced to 30% for the academic year 2020-21 because of the Covid-19 pandemic, which is the same for the academic year 2021-22. Therefore, out of 70 marks of science theory, biology marks are 30. The evaluation is done based on a written exam, practical, and project.

Theory syllabus of Uttar Pradesh Board Class 9 Biology

The UP Board biology for class 9 gets divided into three units out of 5 units of science. Unit 2, unit 4, and unit 5 get dedicated to biology.

Number and name of unitChapters and contentWeightage (marks)
2. Organization in the living wordCell – Basic Unit of life: Cell as a basic unit of life; prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, multicellular organisms; cell membrane and cell wall, cell organelles and cell inclusions; chloroplast, mitochondria, vacuoles, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus; nucleus, chromosomes – basic structure, number. Tissues, Organs, Organ System, Organism: Structure and functions of animal and plant tissues (only four types of tissues in animals; Meristematic and Permanent tissues in plants). Biological Diversity: Diversity of plants and animals-basic issues in scientific naming, the basis of classification. Hierarchy of categories/groups, Major groups of plants (salient features) (Bacteria, Thallophyta, Bryophyta, Pteridophyta, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms). Major groups of animals (salient features) (Non-chordates up to phyla and chordates up to classes).  15

Summary of Theory syllabus of UP Board Class 9 Biology

All three units of the biology syllabus are essential for class exams conducted by the UP board. The weightage for Unit 2, namely “Organization in the living word,” is the highest, and it carries 15 marks. This unit has three chapters: the basic unit of life, tissues, organs, organ system and organism, and biological diversity. All three chapters are essential to learning the basic architecture of living organisms. Unit 4, “our environment,” is about physical resources and biogeochemical cycles in nature. This unit carries only six marks. Lastly, unit 5, “food production,” with a weightage of 4 prints, is about food production. This biology syllabus will provide students with a robust platform for the basic body architecture of living organisms, diversity in living organisms, basics of ecology and components of the ecosystem, and food production.

Practical syllabus of Uttar Pradesh Board Class 9 Biology

The UP Board biology for class 9 practical exam weightage is 15 marks only. Physics, chemistry, and biology, all three sections, are provided with three marks each for practical to perform in the exam. Sessional work and viva, each of them also dedicated three marks. Following is the list of biology experiments.

1. To prepare stained temporary mounts of

(a) Onion peel,

(b) Human cheek cells & to record observations and draw their labelled diagrams.

2. To identify Parenchyma, Collenchyma, and sclerenchyma tissues in plants, striped, smooth, and cardiac muscle fibres and nerve cells in animals from prepared slides. Draw their labelled diagrams.

3. To study the characteristics of Spirogyra, Agaricus, Moss, Fern, Pinus (either with male or female cones), and an Angiospermic plant. First, draw and give two identifying features of the groups they belong to.

4. To observe the given pictures/charts/models of earthworm, cockroach, bony fish, and bird. For each organism, draw their picture and record:

5. a) one specific feature of its phylum.

b) One adaptive feature concerning its habitat.

6. Study the external features of root, stem, leaf, and flower of monocot and dicot plants.

Apart from experiments, 15% of marks are dedicated to project work. Each subject, physics, chemistry, and biology, allocated five marks each. Following are just projects.

1. To get information about the habitat and habitat of birds by preparing a pictorial list of birds found in your area.

2. To prepare a model of DNA.

3. To get information about the causes of local water pollution and study the effect of water pollution on protozoans, Fish, Algae.

4. Study of cell structures by microscopic observation by making a stained slide of onion membrane.

5. To make a pictorial study of the effect of global warming on human life.

6. Role of chemicals in environmental pollution and Ozone layer depletion.

7. To visit the nearby fields and find out from the farmers what fertilizer they used for which crops. Make a list of the nutrients of these fertilizers.

Summary of Practical syllabus UP Board Class 9 Biology

The practical syllabus of UP board biology class 9 has equal weightage for experiments and projects. The experiments need to get conducted in the school in the teacher’s presence, but the projects need to be prepared by students under the teacher’s guidance. Important experiments are staining and mounting plant and animal cells, identifying various types of plant tissues, and dissection of different parts of a flowering plant. Students will also get the opportunity to explore organisms of various phyla of Plant Kingdoms and Animal kingdoms. Project work involves a survey of birds find in your locality, DNA model, water pollution in local water bodies, and its effect on aquatic organisms. Microscopic observation of plant cells, study about causes of ozone depletion, fertilizers get used in your locality, etc.
