Water in lakes and ponds do not freeze at once in cold countries. Give reason.

Solution:

Ice has a sufficiently high specific latent heat of fusion of 336 J g-1. Before freezing, the water in lakes and ponds must release a considerable amount of heat into the atmosphere. The ice coating that has formed on the water’s surface will help reduce heat loss from the lake’s water, which is a poor conductor of heat. As a result, in cold areas, water in lakes and ponds does not freeze.
