The conversion of ozone to molecular oxygen occurs when chlorine atoms are liberated. Ozone depletion is caused by one chlorine atom destroying 10000 ozone molecules. The creation of an ozone hole will result in a higher concentration of UV-B radiation on the earth’s surface. UV – B is known to cause DNA damage, which speeds up the aging process. It also promotes skin discoloration and skin cancer. High amounts of UV-B cause corneal cataracts in humans.
