Because of growing pollution in the post-industrial period, the lichens did not survive, resulting in the storey of Pepper moths in England. The trunks of the trees were darkened by soot. If the industries had been dismantled, pollution levels would have decreased, allowing lichen to regrow and the population of white-winged moths to increase once more.
