Describe the events taking place during interphase.

Solution: The following are the events that occur during interphase:

• G1 phase (Gap 1) – The cell is metabolically active at this time. It develops and prepares DNA for replication.

• S phase (Synthesis) – DNA synthesis takes place during this step. The amount of DNA doubles, but the number of chromosomes remains the same.

• G2 phase (Gap 2) – The cell begins to expand and prepare for division during this phase. The RNA and proteins essential for mitosis are produced during this stage.
