In an electric motor, electrical energy is turned into mechanical energy.

Electric motor operation: When a current is fed through the coil PQRS, the coil begins to rotate anticlockwise because a downward force works on length PQ while an upward force acts on RS, as indicated in the diagram. As a result, the coil turns in the opposite direction. Current flows from P to Q and the magnetic field acts from left to right along the length PQ. A downward force acts on the length PQ, while an upward force acts on the length RS, according to Fleming’s left hand rule. The coil rotates anticlockwise as a result of these two forces.
When the PQ and RS positions in the coil swap, the half ring D comes into contact with brush A and the half ring C comes into contact with brush B, reversing the current direction in coil PQRS. The current is now flowing in the direction SRQP through the coil. After every half rotation, the current through the coil PQRS reverses direction. The coil, as a result, rotates in the same direction. The split rings aid in the reversal of current in the circuit.
