What is restriction endonuclease? What is its significance in genetic engineering?
What is restriction endonuclease? What is its significance in genetic engineering?

Restriction endonuclease are the enzymes obtained from bacteria. They help in cleaving the double stranded DNA at a specific site. They make two types of cut either staggered or blunt. They work only upon palindromic sequences. They twin with DNA ligase that joins the DNA strand right after the cut is made.

Significance of restriction endonuclease in genetic engineering is –

  1. Restriction maps are constructed that facilitate the accurate site where new genes are introduced.
  2. Construction of DNA fingerprints.
  3. It facilitates gene cloning of the GMO.
