Why does an ozone hole form over Antarctica? How will enhanced ultraviolet radiation affect us?

Solution: Antarctica has more ozone holes than the rest of the world. They are generated as the concentration of chlorine in the environment rises. Chlorine is largely released by chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which are widely employed as refrigerants. CFCs travel from different layers of the atmosphere, from the troposphere to the stratosphere, where UV radiation causes chlorine atoms to be released. The conversion of ozone to molecular oxygen occurs when chlorine atoms are liberated. Ozone depletion is caused by one chlorine atom destroying 10000 ozone molecules. The creation of an ozone hole will result in a higher concentration of UV-B radiation on the earth’s surface. UV – B is known to cause DNA damage, which speeds up the aging process. It also promotes skin discoloration and skin cancer. High amounts of UV-B cause corneal cataracts in humans.
