A bag contains 3 red balls and 5 black balls. A ball is drawn at random from a bag. What is the probability that the ball drawn is .
(i) red ?
(ii) not red ?

Solution:

(i) Number of red balls = 3

Number of black balls = 5

Total number of balls = 3+5 = 8

Probability that the ball drawn is red ,

P(E) = 3/8

Hence the probability that the ball drawn is red is 3/8.

(ii) Probability that the ball drawn is not red ,

= 1-(3/8)

= (8-3)/8

= 5/8

Hence the probability that the ball drawn is not red is 5/8.
