A card is drawn from a well-shuffled pack of 52 cards. Find the probability of getting:
(i) ‘2’ of spades
(ii) a jack .

Solution:

Total number of cards = 52.

So number of possible outcomes = 52.

(i) Let E be the event of getting ‘2’ of spades.

There will be only one card of ‘2’ spades.

Number of favourable outcomes = 1

P(E) = 1/52

Hence the probability of getting ‘2’ of spades is 1/52.

(ii) Let E be the event of getting a jack.

There will be 4 cards of jack.

Number of favourable outcomes = 4

P(E) = 4/52 = 1/13

Hence the probability of getting a jack is 1/13.
