The apparent elevation of the item is determined by:

(i) The medium’s refractive index.

(ii) The denser medium’s thickness and

(iii) The wavelength or colour of incoming light

The shift increases as the refractive index of the medium rises. It likewise rises as the thickness of the denser material grows. However, as the wavelength of light employed increases, the shift decreases.
