The metal-carbon bond in metal carbonyls has both the and bond characteristics. The carbonyl carbon donates a lone pair of electrons to the metal’s vacant orbital, forming a connection. The filled d orbital of the metal donates a pair of electrons to the empty antibonding* orbital, forming a bond. This stabilizes and strengthens the metal-ligand connection in its entirety.
