Explain the mechanism of DNA replication. Highlight the role of enzymes in this process.
Explain the mechanism of DNA replication. Highlight the role of enzymes in this process.

Answer: The replication process begins in specific locations known as replication origins. Replication takes place inside a small opening in the DNA known as a Y-shaped replication fork (uncoiling of DNA is by some enzymes eg Helicase and topoisome rase), DNA dependent DNA polymerase catalyses nucleotide polymerization in the 5′ – 3′ directions. Deoxyribonucleotides serve as substrates and provide energy for the process. New strands created on the 3′-5′ template are continuous, while those formed on the 5-‘3’ template are discontinuous. The discontinuously formed fragments are united by the enzyme DNA ligase.
