Acetal refers to gemdialkoxy alkanes with two groups of alkoxy at the terminal carbon atom. The alkyl group is attached to one bond, while the hydrogen atom is connected to the other.

When aldehydes are treated with two monohydric alcohol equivalents in the presence of dry HCl gas, hemiacetals develop. Hemiacetals also combine with another alcohol molecule to produce acetal.
