Why does the sun appear red at sunrise and sunset?

At dawn and sunset, the sun’s light must travel the greatest distance through the atmosphere to reach the observer. Because blue light with a short wavelength is lost owing to scattering, red light with a long wavelength is dispersed a bit but not as much. As a result, blue light is practically non-existent in sunlight that reaches the observer, leaving only red light.
