An umbrella has 8 ribs which are equally spaced (see Fig. 12.13). Assuming umbrella to be a flat circle of radius 45 cm, find the area between the two consecutive ribs of the umbrella.

Solution:

When the umbrella is flat, its radius (r) is 45 cm.

As a result, the circle’s area (A) = πr2 = (22/7)×(45)=6364.29 cm2

In total the number of ribs (n) = 8

∴ The area between the umbrella’s two consecutive ribs = A/n

6364.29/8 cm2

As a result, he area between the umbrella’s two consecutive ribs = 795.5 cm2
