Carbohydrate Digestion
Carbohydrate digestion begins in the buccal cavity, where salivary enzymes degrade starch into simple sugar molecules. In the small intestine, other sugar molecules are broken down to glucose.
Protein digestion
Pepsin, a digestive enzyme released by the stomach’s gastric glands, helps to partially breakdown proteins. The pancreatic juice then secretes trypsin and chymotrypsin enzymes into the small intestine, where they are fully digested.
Fat Digestion
The small intestine is where fats are processed. The liver’s bile fluid emulsifies the fat, breaking it down into little globules. Lipase breaks down these tiny fat globules into glycerol and fatty acids.
