Ernst Chain and Howard Florey, on the other hand, discovered its full potential as an effective antibiotic much later. During World War II, this antibiotic was widely used to treat American soldiers who had been wounded. This discovery earned Fleming, Chain, and Florey the Nobel Prize in 1945.
