What are enzymes?

Enzymes are proteins that catalyze biological reactions. They are quite specific in nature, and they catalyze specific reactions for a certain substrate.

The enzymes are named after a specific reaction or, they are named after a particular class of substrate. Maltase, for example, is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of maltose to glucose.

Also, oxidoreductase enzymes are those that catalyze the oxidation of one substrate while also catalyzing the reaction of another substrate.

An enzyme’s name usually ends in “-ase.”
