The hydroboration–oxidation reaction is one in which borane is used to initiate the oxidation process. Propan–1–ol, for example, is made by subjecting propene to a hydroboration – oxidation reaction. The interaction between propene and diborane (BH3)2 occurs in the above procedure, resulting in trialkyl borane as an extra product. In the presence of aqueous sodium hydroxide, hydrogen peroxide oxidizes this extra product to alcohol.
