How would you distinguish experimentally between an alcohol and a carboxylic acid?

In reaction with Sodium Carbonate, Carboxylic acid produces carbon dioxide gas which converts lime water into a milky form and alcohol does not give this reaction. This test can be used to separate alcohol from carboxylic acid.

Reaction Involved: 2CH3COOH + Na2CO3 → 2CH3COONa + H2O + CO2
