Uttarakhand Board of School Education (UKBSE) has prepared a detailed syllabus for Class 12 Chemistry for the board exam of 2021-22. The new syllabus aims to help students become better in understanding the concepts given in the curriculum of Chemistry. It is a must that students critically analyze the syllabus before they start studying the subject.

Moreover, a sound understanding, knowledge, and application of chapters and concepts given in Class 12 is important not only for the board exams but for further studies as well. Therefore, in this article, we will take a detailed look at the Uttarakhand Board Class 12 Chemistry syllabus to better understand what all chapters are to be covered.


Chemistry is one of the most important yet challenging subjects in Class 12. The entire subject of 100 marks is divided into two papers — theory paper of 70 marks and practical of 30 marks. Basics of the subject studied in previous classes will help the students in building a strong base and understanding of the chapters in Class 12. Halogen Derivatives of Alkanes and Arenes

Haloalkanes, Haloarenes, stability of carbocations, d-l and R-S configurations.


Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers

Nomenclature, physical and chemical properties, methods of preparation, etc

Gist of the theory syllabus

From the above table, it can be said that the syllabus is quite comprehensive and a few chapters are important to study in detail. Especially, chapters such as Electrochemistry, Surface Chemistry, P-block elements, and Amines should be given more time to study. The rest of the chapters also need attention as per the marks allotted. It is interesting to note here that many students in the previous years have said they find chemistry papers not too difficult but tricky.

Therefore, analyzing the syllabus repeatedly and solving previous year question papers is an intelligent approach to studying Chemistry. Also, the subject demands a fair amount of memorization, but the clarity of concepts is as much important. The Theory paper is for 70 Marks and the total time allotted to solve it is 3 Hours.



Practical Syllabus of UKBSE Board Class 12 Chemistry


Apart from the theory paper, Chemistry for class 12 under the Uttarakhand Board also has a practical paper. The practical paper of the UKBSE Board Chemistry Class 12 syllabus 2021-22 consists of practical experiments, project work, class records, and viva. The student is awarded marks on internal and external evaluations.

Internal assessment consists of project work, class attendance, maintenance of project file/journal. While the external assessment contains experiments, maintenance of experiment file, viva, and other criteria defined by the Uttarakhand Board.

–> Project Work:

Projects have to cover scientific investigations that involve proper laboratory testing and proper collection of information from secondary sources. Any topic may be chosen with the teacher’s approval, considering all the aspects of syllabus and time required to complete the same. We are providing a few project topics below which students can choose from:


  1. Study of presence of oxalate ions in guava fruit at different stages of ripening.


  1. Study the quantity of casein in different samples of milk.


  1. Preparation of soyabean milk and its comparison with the natural milk for curd formation, effect of temperature, etc.


  1. Study of the impact of potassium bisulfate as a food preservative under various conditions (temperature, concentration,n pr time, etc.)


  1. Study of digestion of starch by salivary amylase and the effect of pH and temperature on it.


  1. Comparative study of the fermentation rate of the following materials: wheat flour, gram flour, potato juice, carrot juice, etc.


  1. Extraction of essential oils present in Saunf (aniseed), Ajwain (carum), Ilaichi (cardamom).


  1. Study typical food contaminants in fat, butter, sugar, turmeric powder, chili powder, and pepper.


  1. Chemical Kinetics



(Any one of the following) :



(a) Effect of concentration and temperature on the reaction rate between sodium thiosulphate and hydrochloric acid.



(b) Study of reaction rate of any one of the following:



(i) Reaction of iodide ions with hydrogen peroxide at room temperature using different concentrations of iodide ions.



(ii) Reaction between potassium iodate, KIO3, and sodium sulfite (Na2 SO3 ) using starch solution as an indicator (clock reaction).



(c) Acid hydrolysis of ethyl acetate.



  1. Thermochemistry



Any one of the following experiments:



i] Enthalpy of dissolution of copper sulfate or potassium nitrate.



ii] Enthalpy of neutralization of strong acid (HCl) and strong base (NaOH).



iii] Determination of enthalpy change during interaction (hydrogen bond formation) between acetone and chloroform.



iv] Heat of displacement of Cu from CuSO4 by Zinc.



  1. Electrochemistry



Variation of cell potential in Zn|Zn2+||Cu2+|Cu with change in concentration of electrolytes (CuSO4 or ZnSO4) at room temperature (demonstration).



  1. Chromatography (demonstration)


(i) Separation of pigments from extracts of leaves and flowers by paper chromatography and Determination of Rf values.

(ii) Separation of constituents present in an inorganic mixture containing two cations only constituents having a significant difference in Rf values to be provided.

  1. Preparation of Inorganic Compounds

(i) Preparation of double salt of ferrous ammonium sulfate of potash alum.

(ii) Preparation of potassium ferric oxalate.


  1. Preparation of Organic Compounds



(i) p-Nitroacetanilide



(ii) Aniline yellow or 2- Naphthol aniline dye.



(iii) Iodoform



(iv) Phthalic or succinic anhydride.



(v) Dibenzalacetone



  1. Tests for the functional groups present in organic compounds



Unsaturation, alcoholic, phenolic, aldehydic, ketonic, carboxylic, and amino (primary) groups.



  1. Characteristic tests of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins in pure samples and their detection in given foodstuffs.



  1. Determination of concentration/molarity of KMnO4 solution by titrating it against a standard solution of:



  1. i) Oxalic acid



(ii) Ferrous ammonium sulfate (Students will be required to prepare standard solutions by weighing themselves).



  1. Qualitative analysis 

1) Determination of two cations from a given mixture of salts.

2) Determination of two anions from a given mixture of salts.



Cations – Pb2+, Cu2+, As3+, Al3+, Fe3+, Mn2+, Zn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+, Mg2+,NH4+,



Anions – CO3 2-, SO3 2-, SO4 2-, NO2 – NO3, Cl–, Br–, I–, PO4 3- C2 O4 2- CH3 COO–

Q1. How should I prepare for the UKBSE Class 12 Chemistry Exam?

Ans. Students must be familiar with the exam syllabus, question paper pattern, and they should focus on crucial areas (refer to important questions, sample papers to get an idea), and stick to a study schedule to prepare for the exam. They must also devote a significant amount of time to revising and practicing numerical problems.


Q2. Will the syllabus be reduced for the academic session 2021-22 as well?

Ans: Keeping in mind the Covid-19 restrictions, the UKBSE had reduced the syllabus for all the subjects by 25% for the year 2020-21 for the convenience of students. Q3. From where should students prepare for Class 12 Chemistry Exam?

Ans: Students can solve the Class 12 questions from their UKBSE state text books. They can also go through the last ten years’ question papers to familiarize themselves with the entire coursework.

Ans. Knowing the syllabus ahead of time allows students to have a better understanding of the topics, leading to confidence during the exam. It also helps students to improve their time management skills.
